About

Sara Schuhardt is a flutist, scholar, and music educator in northern Colorado, where she is currently on the faculties of the University of Northern Colorado and Aims Community College. She earned her Doctor of Arts degree in Flute Performance at the University of Northern Colorado, focusing her dissertation research on analyses of musical agency in the flute works of composer Erwin Schulhoff. Dr. Schuhardt teaches a variety of courses, including applied flute lessons, music theory, aural skills, and Music Appreciation.

As an active performer, Sara has performed and taught internationally as a guest artist at the XXXIII Festival Internacional De Flautistas in Lima, Peru. She has been heard throughout the United States as flute and piccolo concerto soloist (with Omaha Symphonic Winds, the Heartland Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Cherokee Symphony) and chamber player (with the flute quartet Flauto Donne and the Schuhardt-Frost Duo at the 2017 College Music Society National Conference). Sara has most recently performed in the trio In Triplicate with clarinetist Kwami Barnett and pianist Iris Zhang. The group advocates new music by commissioning and performing works by Colorado composers and organizing various outreach recitals at regional universities and public schools.

Dr. Schuhardt’s diverse background includes teaching Music Appreciation at Early College Academy in Greeley, CO, instructing Applied Flute at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and Iowa Western Community College, building a large private flute studio, and giving clinics in universities and public schools. She also recently served as President of the Colorado Flute Association and previously worked as Assistant Director of the internationally touring Heartland Community Flute Choir. Additionally, Sara’s wide-ranging interests have taken her into projects in digital arts marketing, writing tutoring, and copyediting.

Sara also holds a Master’s degree in Flute Performance and Music Education from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where she studied under Christine Erlander Beard, and a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Buena Vista University in northwest Iowa. In her free time, when she is not playing her flute or teaching, she enjoys doing anything that is both active and outside as well as drinking coffee and reading.
